Seriously, Andrew is on to something. Reminds me of the WWLDD? shirts I was peddling back in the Titanic days.

Just last week in our class we were talking about racism in the media, and we had like a 20 minute discussion about white savior films, like “Blood Diamond” “The Constant Gardener” “Dances With Wolves” “The last Samurai,” etc…and of course the inner-city teacher sub-genre…and sometimes it’s fun to picture not who would play us, but who would play the students…how would Wardrobe dress them? What race would Lou Diamond Phillips be cast to play this time? How would they be posing on the front cover (the young black boy with his arms crossed and head leaning back, smug…the young latina with the tight clothes, the poor white kid dressed in baggy gangsta clothes)? The students had fun with the game too, although they actually do keep telling us we have to see Freedom Writers…

I was just hoping the school would fire us so that the students could stand on their desks and say, “Oh captain, my captain,” Dead Poet’s Society style…that would make my educator’s journey complete.

P.S. Zach Braff and Jason Biggs wouldn’t be bad casting…but I’d prefer Noah Wyle to play me…or even better, Rich Lowry, the editor of right-wing National Review…I see him on c-span sometimes and I swear he looks exactly like he could be my evil twin. At least 5 years ago.

Actually though, it might be an interesting exercise to imagine your story through Hollywood’s eyes so that you know what not to do…
